The Symbiotic Interaction Between Ontologies and Artificial Intelligence: A Bidirectional Enhancement

Abstract
This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the bidirectional interactions between ontologies and artificial intelligence, examining how ontologies enhance AI capabilities and how AI contributes to ontology development. Employing a documentary research approach synthesizing recent literature (2019-2026), the study identifies seven distinct impacts in each direction of influence.

Findings reveal that ontologies enhance AI by supporting machine learning, enabling explainable AI, improving performance through semantic search, facilitating natural language processing, enabling ontology curation, mitigating hallucinations, and enhancing semantic discovery. Conversely, AI enhances ontologies by enabling expansion through knowledge discovery, enriching conceptual relations, refining structures, facilitating semantic interoperability, automating axiom generation, validating through competency questions, and creating large ontology models and dynamic adaptive ontologies.

The convergence produces emergent properties—dynamic adaptive ontologies, large ontology models, hybrid reasoning systems, and living knowledge ecosystems—unattainable by either domain alone. This symbiotic relationship represents a paradigm shift from static knowledge to living, evolving systems, resolving the symbolic-subsymbolic dichotomy. The framework provides foundations for sophisticated knowledge-based systems while identifying critical future research directions including empirical validation, standardized metrics, and ethical considerations.
